If you run lesspipe directly yes, however if you run less I cannot 
duplicate.  I do believe the less binary does some file magic to make sure 
that the file itself is actually an rpm before passing it along to the 
rather dumb* lesspipe.


* I say dumb because it does not use file magic, it only judges by file 
extension.
