Yeah, I agree with your concerns. I always use non-onboard cards with hardware 
mixing where I can. I don't want to be downgraded to software mixing in those 
cases. I do think they should find a way to disable it for cards that do 
hardware mixing.

On the flip side, I am very happy to see dmix come long to replace the crap 
that is artsd and esd.
