Yes, it is possible. I am actually using it on my laptop right now. My
goal was to have PackageKit restart the machine using kexec instead of
the full restart.

Here are patches I made for that:

You most likely do not use PK on a server, but take a look at the
helper script ck-system-restart-quick in the ConsoleKit patch. It
can be used outside of CK. It's not perfect but works for me.
