Do you have any Samba mounts?  I don't know if it is still the case, but on 
some versions of Samba I used, if network connection to a share was 
unexpectedly closed and hadn't timed out yet, all file accesses in the 
directory (possibly all filesystems, I can't recall) would be VERY slow.
