It certainly works with NetworkManager and the NM-openvpn plugin.  NM
will use the returned DNS servers from the openvpn server if you tell it
not to ignore them.  When the VPN connection goes away or is
disconnected, NM will restore your previous DNS servers from the
underlying connection on which the VPN was running.
