  Perhaps this can be helped by putting the staging area into a short
term freeze prior to things going to stable and make the ISO snapshot
available at that time (or maybe it should be rebuilt nightly as well do
you think?)

   That would give a chance for auto-qa as you described as well as
normal testers who may want to test a clean install from the snapshot.
