Printing issue in Fedora 16

parallel port and serial port are different , serial ports are for old
modems and very old mouses before PS/2, not used anymore in nowadays.

But what is the problem? gedit print to usb printer isn't it?

May be you miss support for parallel ports in kernel at Fedora 14/15, I
know that parallel port still detected and working.
