Well, in the past that would be the way to notify all sponsors that
someone is available to be sponsored, so it had a function. ;) 

Under the new setup as you note, not so much. 

I'd suggest filing a bug with packagedb and ask that groups have the
ability to disable sponsor emails, or alternately that they add a 'add
and sponsor' button so you can do both in one step and avoid the email.
