I do, but ext4 handles my workload marvelously.  For high-speed
create/remove, /tmp appears as though it were a tmpfs without any of the
drawbacks.  The details of performance probably depend on each
individual workload, but it would be nice to see evidence that tmpfs is
really a noticeable benefit for a variety of workloads.

That seems like a very reasonable approach, and if tmpfs turns out to be
an obvious improvement for most users, then the default could be
reconsidered in the future.
