Couldn't we enable 256 colors by default on TERM?

This thread was to get the whole problem before proposing this feature.
If you want to lead that Pádraig, no probs for me.
Else I'll take it and sort this out with you guys.

vim works out of the box with xterm in 256 colors at least.

For screen, I am using `term "screen-256color" '
But again, it depends on the TERM used.
