Disabling ABRT?

Yup. Thanks guys. ulimit -c was 0

ulimit -c unlimited

Fixes my problem. Cores created in the cwd. I would have thought that 
this should be enabled by default in /etc/security/limits.conf in the 
absence of abrt.
