As a non-Dev, but running rawhide.
Hence reply here.

yum.conf skip_broken=1 by default.
It would remove some of the dep coughs.

Maybe yum-local the critpath stuff?
yum pluginise the following:
http://wwoods.fedorapeople.org/files/critical-path/old/critpath.py

modify yum-local to keep say 5 copies? 
(in case something hits the fan)
