Why does so much virt stuff depend on glusterfs?

Even if we're talking about use as *just* a client? I thought the translators were only needed if you're hosting the bricks on the same machine. I thought it was possible to have just libgfapi on the client, and then the machine with the bricks would need glusterfs.
