ie I don't want to make the api stabilization process in my software that
would make it safely shippable by distros, but I want it to be shipped
anyway let's have users keep the pieces

kernel folks have no problem getting their latest software shipped even in
ancient distros. Admittedly, they worked hard to reach this state
