In the old days, we used to have a service like smolt, to collect
hardware data. The installer asked for participation in this service
after install. IMHO that was a service, reporting every month or so.

Debian has popcon[1], to collect statistics.

One could even argue: when fedora already knows, what I have installed,
it may be nice to get a reminder to update packages, when there is a
known security issue. Of course, that needs to be opt-in, but it may be
a nice service.
