Creating SRPM without rpmbuild

So apparently rpmbuild works, but ignores my %global statements, so the 
command fails:

$ rpmbuild -bs openscad-devel.spec
sh: 1: Bad substitution
error: File /home/churchyard/rpmbuild/SOURCES/openscad-2014.01-.tar.gz: 
No such file or directory
