KDE via startx locks up before startup completes

In F21, I'm not able to start X from the console after I've logged in. 
(I haven't tried running X without gdm already started.)  When I tried 
to run X, the screen goes blank and no input works.  I had to ssh in to 
kill the new X process.  Everything else continued working after that.
