Questions about font packaging, hinting and non-responsive maintainer process

He wrote back, here's what I've learned:
1. He uses a program called Fontographer by Fontlab [1] which
apparently includes a couple of algorithms for autohinting. He said
that it would be a huge task to do the hinting manually for such a
large number of glyphs, so it's all done by the software.
2. He does not install both fonts simultaneously on his systems, he
chooses whichever looks best to him, e.g. on windows vista he prefers
the one without hinting. That explains the same name and metadata in
both of them.
3. He hasn't run any tests on anything other than windows and he
advises users to check the provided HTML file in order to decide which
font works best on their systems.
