Konsole: how to avoid screen reset when exiting vi?

I'm using Konsole 1.6.6 (Using KDE 3.5.9-5.fc8 Fedora).

Each time I exit vi the screen is reset to show what was there before I started vi.
It would be much more useful if the last view I had in vi was preserved.
With TERM=vt102 I can get this behavior, but then other things don't work right.
Is there a way to get what I want with the default TERM=xterm?
