Strange delays on kmail

When sending a message I get 8-10 seconds during which I can't read the next 
message or do anything else.  The 'sent' message is greyed out (probably from 
un-focussed window) but it doesn't actually go for that period of time.

Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?
