With issues like you're having, I'd create a new user with a clean user $HOME 
and see if the problems persist. (feel free to ignore me if you have done 
that...)

I'm not into that right now. It's a lot of work for what is unlikely to be the 
issue. I have thought of it and might resort to it sometime down the road.
