Looking at /etc/X11/prefdm you can see that it includes /etc/sysconfig/desktop 
file and inmports the DISPLAYMANAGER var from it. It could be GNOME, KDE, WDM 
or XDM. Haven't find is anybody use DISPLAY var from this file or not at all.
