I'm not quite sure what you mean (exactly) here but if I go to
preferences/content settings and click the "Disable individual plug-ins"
it tries to open "about:plugins" but this page doesnt render, it just
hangs. I guess I need to be able to disable these using a command line
switch.

I could possibly use the Plug-ins "block all" switch and then the manage
exceptions dialogue but I havent been able to figure out how to specify
the "pattern" to put in to the exceptions setup.
