the network. It turned out that it wasn't installed, so the command line 
offered to install it for me... and it did!!!

I don't understand it:

either I have had internet connectivity in KDE all along, despite 
knetworkmanager showing networking as disabled; or

gnome turned it on and it remained on when I logged into KDE.


I have two hands again ;-)
