Just to add to this, I'm seeing something similar here on this box. IE a black 
screen and movable mouse pointer. 
However "sometimes" I have been able to switch to another virtual Desktop via 
CTRL Fx or bring up Yakuake F12 to then quit and restart plasma-shell.
