I'd like to find out why the size change is occuring. Is this a case of a
little bit being added to lots of files, are there some scratch files that left
behind or what?

If there is no way to avoid the size increase, then we probably do need this
to be optional per spin as the size vs speed tradeoff decision may be
different per spin.
