Officially, you should have the international driver's license to be
safe. From my experience, the national one is just fine. Rental
companies don't care at all and policemen are actually more familiar
with a plastic card of the size of credit card. The international one
just confuses them because it looks like from a different century. And
it indeed is, it was created in 1949 :)

P.S. I don't want to advise you against the international driver's
license. If you have time, just go get it. At least here in the Czech
Republic, you get it immediately and the fee is 50 CZK ($2). I just hav
en't had time this year :-)
