It's been almost a decade fontconfig was introduced and every major GUI app
migrated to it.
Legacy core fonts support is not going away any time soon, but the associated
fonts are *not* going to be installed by default anymore. Users of applications
like Mathematica will just have to install them explicitelly.
That, or ask their application upstream to use the *current* font backend, like
pretty much everyone else.
