I booted on the same machine, only different disk partitions,
Fedora 9.  Just to be sure I used the same xorg.conf file
and the same terminal font.  Try as I might I cannot find
any misrendered glyphs anywhere.  I was changing hinting,
smoothing, rendering type.  Nada.  Even "Subpixel smoothing"
works without any problems.  "Best contrast" or "Best shapes"
look better, but that is about it.

Reboot that to rawhide and I have samples of bad letters
all over the place.

Samples of a similar text attached.  In both cases
they were done with "Subpixel smoothing" (not optimal
for that hardware).  This is still not bad.  The other
times I had such samples on rawhide which were just
not readable. :-)
