patch for style system computation and adding stretch to gfx structures

Here's the main style system patch updated, with the constructors fixed, which
let me find some other places that needed to be patched.  I've put some
"FIXMEs" in gfx where they were obvious, but I'm sure a lot more things are
needed.

Requesting review from bzbarsky for the layout/* code and vlad for everything
else; jdaggett is also welcome to review if he wants.
