Would have helped if the person suggesting this actually read that Qt page. 
Quoting from the page:

"Note that the filtering we use in Qt 4.4 and earlier is pretty much the same
as Freetype’s default filtering, but unlike before we now also support the
other filtering settings."

Nothing new here.  So this is about supporting all four different filters,
instead of one we support now.  That issue is tracked in the following cairo
bug:
