Oops!!  I realized that smc-meera-fonts is the preferred font (as per the
90-smc-fonts.conf) over lohit-malayalam. 

Thereby, the required combinations: 
(i) 0D24 + 0D4D + 0D32 =>  ത  +  ്  +  ല  = ത്ല
(ii) 0D2B + 0D4D + 0D32 =>  ഫ  +  ്  +  ല  = ഫ്ല
(iii) 0D35 + 0D4D + 0D32 =>  വ  +  ്  +  ല  = വ്ല         breaks in
lohit-malayalam.
