I think the current BS behaviour under Wijesekera is considered
optimal for users and the same behaviour is desired when editing
committed text and that could be provided by surrounding text.

Interesting idea - that might help, but probably users prefer not
to leave the keyboard just to edit committed text.

I think some came up earlier: avoiding illegal text sequences from
partial deletion of text, consistency of BS and input behaviour and
avoiding the need for preedit, I think.
