I cannot reproduce the failure of "0 <= index && index < 24".
Are you still reproduce the same error?

Which application did you use on gnome-shell desktop?
Do you mean to disable gnome-shell on virtualbox?
If you use gnome-shell on virtualbox, the specific verion needs to be installed
and also VBoxGuestAdditions needs to be installed.
At the moment, I'd suggest to disable gnome-shell if you use the VM.
If you install compiz-gnome, Classic GNOME is shown on GDM login prompt.
