Does the LED light glow when you plug the ethernet cable to the system?

Open a terminal, and tell us the output of:

  sudo /etc/init.d/network restart
  /sbin/ifconfig -a
  /sbin/lsmod
  /sbin/route -n
  /sbin/lspci
