I've just committed a patch into IcedTea that significantly improves our 
performance against the Batik testsuite.  A few small rendering problems 
remain (see http://iced-tea.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=64), but by and 
large it should all work now.

I missed the IcedTea 1.3 release by a day, but it's in the mercurial 
repository and should be included in the next release.
