F12: "start" menu takes a very long time to load

Interesting.  Would you mind commenting such in

 From what I gather from my only slight comprehension of the 
xserver-1.7.1-window-pictures.patch in question, and after a slightly 
heated discussion in #kde-devel from others that *do* know it a bit 
better... it would seem that the patch is far from ideal, and while it 
does fix kms-related crashes, it comes at a performance hit in some 
cases (very well be the non-kms case it seems).
