How to stop thunderbird causing kde notification popups?

As far as I know, thunderbird lacks notification support (firefox seems 
to have it though).  For me, it uses popups from it's systray icon, 
mostly for new-mail, which is configurable via
Edit->Preferences->General->When new messages arrive->Show an alert
