Taking that a a cue:

I removed yawp from the panel, then I uninstalled the old version (rpm -e), 
then I installed the new version (yum install), then I added the new yawp to 
the panel and configured it, then I logged out and back in and I again got a 
black screen with an active mouse pointer. Switching to another virtual 
terminal, I 'rpm-e'ed the new yawp, switched back to the graphical terminal, 
killed X and re-logged in and all was fine. yawp-0.3.5-1 is bay-uh-d.
