an HP LaserJet 5L uses a centronics _type_ connector, but it uses a different
communication standard then what centronics is.

it uses ieee 1284, a bi-directional parallel communications and requires
higher quality and shorter length cables than centronics. see;

if you wish to put the HP LaserJet 5L back in service, do not use a
centronics/usb adapter. get an ieee 1284 card.
