No problems here.....

Potentially a stupid question but, are you certain they are "gone" and just not "fade to black"?  Seems the systray is gone as well?  Have you tried mousing over where the clock is to see if something pops up or right clicked in an area?

Have you changed the theme?  Are your desktop settings "default" or?
