This statement kind of stuck in my mind, since I'm in the same boat.  One
alternative that I've stumbled upon is LXQT.  The latest version uses QT5,
you can use KWIN, Oxygen, etc. if you wish, and it is definitely snappier
than Plasma.  Of course it lacks the razzle, dazzle of Plasma.
