OK, so it would be fairer to say "it is infrequently used". :)

That works as well.  The point is to start removing some clutter from
the kernel spec file, and this is somewhat low hanging fruit.  I would
simply rename "baserelease" to "buildid", but the rpmdev tools know
about baserelease and we use those quite frequently.
