Oh, we do have software patents. Tens of thousands of them I've been
told. They aren't allowed according to the European Patent Convention
and national patent laws, but they're being issued in a steady stream
anyway. But since the patents aren't legal it's uncertain how well any
particular patent will hold up in court if someone decides to spend the
money to challenge it, and that may hold the parasites back a bit and
make them choose their extortion victims more carefully.
