Yes, you're right. I do have gnome's notification-daemon on the system, but unfortunately, when trying to send via notify-send, the daemon crashes with a bus error:

notifcation-daemon itself states:

This pointed me to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23720, which points
upstream:https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649588
