Welcome to Fedora Weekly News Issue 224[1] for the week ending May 5, 
2010. What follows are some highlights from this issue.

This issue begins with Project announcements, including another Fedora 
Community Gaming session this weekend, details on an upcoming Fedora 
Board IRC meeting, and opening of voting for naming Fedora 14. In news 
from the Fedora Planet, thoughts on a Fedora Kiosk spin, a report on 
Sugar-on-a-Stick testing, and what you don't know about NetworkManager. 
In Marketing team news, an update on the Allegheny Team and their 
accomplishments, report on some work for the F13 spins website, and an 
upcoming blog posting on hardware enablements in F13. One post from 
Fedora In the News this week, from Linux Gazette, covering some of the 
exciting aspects of Fedora 13 beta. In Design Team news, a new owner for 
Hackergotchis request service, and Security Advisories rounds out this 
issue with security-related Fedora packages released this past week for 
F11, F12 and F13. Read on!

Unfortunately, as Kamisamanou Burgess is busy with study, the audio 
version of FWN - FAWN - is on hold until early May. You can still listen 
to old issues[2] on the Internet Archive, though. If anyone is 
interested in helping spread the load of FAWN production, please contact us!

=== Fedora Community Gaming Session 2 ===

Bruno Wolff III announced[1]:

"There will be another Fedora Community Gaming session this weekend. We 
will be playing Wesnoth as a team or teams (with the game(s) ending on 
first human elimination). Depending on the number of participants we may 
have humans on both sides or just one team versus the AI.

We will be starting at: UTC: 0100 Saturday May 8, 2010 EDT: 9pm Friday 
May 7, 2010

Since unlike last week (with bzflag) drop ins are not easily 
accommodated, please be on time.

I'll be following the #fedora-games IRC chat room before we get started. 
We will meet in the "fedora" room in the official Wesnoth lobby.

Players will need a 1.8 or 1.8.1 version of Wesnoth. Currently F14 has 
1.8.1, F13 has 1.8 (but will probably have 1.8.1 in at least testing by 
Friday). For F13, F12, and F11 I have made 1.8.1 scratch builds 
available for F13[2], F12[3], and F11[4]

You can also use a nightly compose of the games spin live image which 
will have either 1.8 or 1.8.1[5]

"It is now time to choose the release name for Fedora 14. The Fedora 
community submitted suggestions for the Fedora 14 release name, and that 
list has been narrowed down to the final six candidates. Now you can 
vote on these names and assist in the final selection for the successor 
of Fedora 13 "Goddard".

This vote runs until 10 May 2010 at 23:59:59 UTC. Other important facts:

* We are using the Range Voting method[2]

* Ballots may be cast on the Fedora Elections System[3]

* If this is the first time you've used the voting system, you might

approximately 1 hour.

In "Rethinking PID 1", Lennart Poettering sketched[1] out the design and 
rationale for a new replacement of init and Upstart, and the entire boot 
process.

Richard W.M. Jones explained[2] how to get a Windows VM to run a batch 
file at boot time, as well as install[3] a Windows service and 
install[4] a device driver, all remotely, using libguestfs.

Adam Williamson described[5] the development and QA processes around the 
latest X server and GLX releases (which resulted in an unstable latest 
Ubuntu release).

Jesus Rodriguez announced[6] that Spacewalk 1.0, the upstream of Red Hat 
Network Satellite, has been released.

Yaakov Nemoy explained[7] one way of building a minimal desktop using 
xmonad and slock.

Dan Williams posted[8] "What you don't know about NetworkManager".

Daniel Walsh introduced[9] the Fedora Kiosk spin. "Imagine a machine 
sitting at a library, that had no operating system on it, except a 
livedvd..."

Mel Chua mentioned[10] that the next Sugar-on-a-Stick release is being 
smoke tested daily. "We need to come up with a better way of doing this 
for v.4.0, so better test cases, test case/reporting management systems, 
and Activity criteria (read: tests, please) are extremely welcome – 
that’s all long-term, though."

Siddhesh Poyarekar found[11] a way to find out how to trace network 
connections to a process, in real time. "The obvious answer was 
netstat/lsof, but the problem was that this application would be up for 
merely seconds and he did not know when/where it started up. All he had 
was his telnetd log telling him about the connections. So I decided to 
go the SystemTap way..."

Bastien Nocera "Discussed[12] as part of the GNOME-Shell design plans, 
and at the Usability hackfest we had in London earlier this year, we 
wanted to have icons that would only draw attention to themselves when 
needed."

Justin O'Brien corrected[13] the Fedora 11 EOL notice. Fedora 11's end 
of life is currently scheduled for June 18, 2010, which is 30 days from 
the release of Fedora 13.

Paul W. Frields announced that Red Hat press blog will include an entry 
concerning Hardware Enablements in Fedora 13[1] and Robyn Bergeron make 
sure that the content on Fedora wiki related to Hardware Enablements 
were wiki friendly[2]

Mel Chua gave us an update on Allegheny Team status[3] and also wrote a 
wiki page to keep everything ordered[4]. Allegheny Students are planning 
a early F13 release party[5] as their term is coming to and end.

Nelson Marquez started an article for Gnome Journal[6] in which he will 
focus the synergy among Fedora and Gnome. Nelson also started a thread 
very complex[7] about Fedora Project in Portuguese. This is a passionate 
topic and passionate comments were shared, but Mario Torre[8] and then 
Paul W. Frields[9] tried to keep this as a productive debate.

Mel Chua did a lot of work for F13 spin websites[10], later on she 
announced that F13 spin website were ready[11]

Mel Chua reported[1] the remaining task of finishing the new spin web 
pages "Freeze is Tuesday, so I believe that is the deadline we are 
shooting for" then she reported[2] the task completion "All right - it's 
freeze day, and I *believe* we're good to ship" and asked for a sanity 
check "Fresh eyeballs welcome; I've been staring at these pages way too 
long."

Papadeas Pierros, who recently took ownership of the hackergotchi 
request service[1] proposed a size change for those images used on 
Planet Fedora[2] "Considering that most people nowadays use big 
resolutions on their screens I am proposing to change that 80x80 to 
100x100 or even better on 120x120". Nicu Buculei, who used to take care 
of those, pointed most of the images are larger than the minimum size 
"All those years I made the hckergotchis at 96x96 :p " and agreed with 
an increase, so Pierros updated[3] the specification "OK if we are ok on 
that I shall change the recommendation to 100x100 ~ 120x120 :)"
