Hi folks, I've built and am now testing the vtk-5.0.2-13.at.src.rpm 
listed in comment #20.

It still has problems with the following items which were listed in 
comment #10 :

 - undefined-non-weak-symbols
 - patented MPEG2 bits will have to be removed:
    [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-2 ]
 - many files in the -debug package have permissions issues

and I'd like to add one additional observation:

 - The vtk-devel package places a large number of files in /usr/include/.  
   Almost all are called "vtk*" and are thus unlikely to result in name 
   collisions with other software.   However, the "/usr/include/internal" 
   dir is problematic.  Please consider placing all the vtk include 
   files and subdirs in a directory such as /usr/include/vtk
