Correct. Apologies for the potential confusion.

Yeah, the telepathy-haze binary on its own simply runs and listens for D-Bus
signals which it then uses to connect and send/receive messages on its
respective supporting protocols. I recommend using a client such as Empathy or
one of the other clients listed on
http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/wiki/Components to actually interface with it.
(The recent Empathy releases needed a new version of the mission-control
backend. Now that Sindre has bumped those, I'll bump Empathy as well once my new
monitor arrives within the next day or two.)
