It should certainly be cleaner to have buildrequires
libxfce4util-devel >= 4.4.0

In my tests I see the mini images, but the main place where 
the image should appear stays black.

gthumb has more mimetypes:
MimeType=image/bmp;image/jpeg;image/gif;image/png;image/tiff;image/x-bmp;image/x-ico;image/x-png;image/x-pcx;image/x-tga;image/xpm;image/svg+xml;
Also maybe the .eps? This is more for upstream.
