If it's just the block driver/filesystem modules that are bad, is it possible to
include a subset of functionality?  For example, "Drag and Drop, Text and File
Copy/Paste" and "Time synchronization", "Automatic guest screen resolution
resizing"?

Looking at http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net/faq.php there is a fairly big
list of stuff.
